Welcome to the Silk Road Express team’s website for the Mongolia Rall
We are 3 guys from Edinburgh and Midlothian who want to raise money for charity by taking on a great challenge in taking part in this year’s Charity Rallies - Mongolia Rally!
The Mongolia Rally starts on 5th July 2008 in London and ends 10,000 miles later in Ulaanbataar, the capital of Mongolia. This journey will take approximately 5 weeks.
During our journey we will cross 5 mountain ranges and 2 deserts in the vehicle of our choice – an 11 year old Subaru Impreza!
Our route will take us through 18 countries in Western and Eastern Europe and central Asia including Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia.
This event is organised by the UK charity ‘Go Help’.
Our purpose in taking part in the rally is to raise valuable funds for important charities. We would urge anyone visiting our website therefore to please make an online donation to the charities we are supporting. It’s not difficult - just click on the ‘Charities‘ or ‘Quick Donation‘ tab above. We thank you in advance for any donations you decide to make.
For further information on the Mongolia Rally please see their official website at: http://mongolia.charityrallies.org/
The Challenges
We are faced with the prospect of some rather awkward but exciting challenges:
· Driving over 10,000 miles, quarter way around the globe
· Thousands of miles of dirt track roads
· No support team
· Limited or no communication for thousands of miles
· Limited or very little mechanical knowledge
· Several mountain ranges
· Two huge deserts
· A Basic GPS (that doesn’t work outside Europe) and good old fashioned map reading and compass skills
· Limited or no spoken/reading/written communcation skills of local languages in countries we are crossing
· Possible interaction with local wildlife eg snakes, wolves, bears, wild dogs, mosquitos and scorpions & bandits.
Why is our team called the Silk Road Express ?
The Silk Road was an historical trade route running across Asia to the Mediterranean Sea, enabling China to trade with other countries. It was named the Silk Road because a lot of silk was traded along it.
During our journey we will be closely following one of the Silk routes.
